Noodle Theory

It rained today!! It felt a little more like autumn and more of the holidays. Rain has always been the symbolism of the holidays which means it creates this warm-feeling inside me, makes me cheery. A fond memory I have of rain was when my step-dad would hang these icicle lights around the house and leave them on during the night and there was a time where it rained for two/three days straight and during the nights with my curtains closed the icicle lights would emit this faint glow which softly illuminated my room. I would be in my bed with this heavy blanket, which kept me very warm, falling asleep to the sound of rain pitter-pattering on the roof and the last thing I see is the glow. *SIGH* I LOVE RAIN!!!

More than nostalgia kicking into high gear it also became a great transition into this ramen place I tried in Oakland called Noodle Theory. It was a spontaneous decision to come to this place. I was in Oakland to donate blood and as I was driving there I saw Noodle Theory and thought of rewarding myself after my donation to try some noodles.

This place is located on a corner and there is a shopping plaza less than a block away where one can park; there is also street parking as well. It's a small place, can't really fit more than 30 people at a time, inside. There is also outdoor seating and when I got there I was lucky to be seated at the counter after a minute of putting my name down on the waitlist. Noodle Theory has an open kitchen which is great to observe the hard-working cooks preparing the meals.

I saw ramen so I ordered Slow Roasted Pork Belly Ramen and Goat Cheese and Yau Choy fried Wontons. My server was very prompt and swift. While waiting for my order I received edamame with this thick glze/sauce, pretty good. Then my food came and it was so good-looking. The presentation was on point  and this came out immediately, well not very immediately more like it felt that way.

Took a sip of the soup and it coated my taste buds with this flavorful broth. The noodles itself was on-the-dot with how ramen noodles should be cooked. It was in the middle of al dente and fully cooked and it tasted how ramen noodles should taste like. The noodles itself was a little thinner than what I'm usually used to. . . it's not a complain more of a heads up to those ramen eaters which expect a little more noodle in their noodle. There wasn't much toppings other than the radish and fermented sprouts; they were pretty good. The pork belly was a show-stopper; it was tender and flavorful which of course complimented the soup. As I was eating the pork I kept thinking over and over again how it was tender and moist.

The wontons itself was pretty tasty, I like the goat cheese with the yau choy, and with the tangy sauce it took it to another level of flavor. Plus the wontons were fried to perfection, no sign of lingering grease. This whole meal really made my hunger happy. Thinking about this meal after today's rain would really hit the spot, however for this meal it was around $21 ($12 for the ramen and $7.50 for the wontons) so it would have to hit the spot another paycheck later.

For a spontaneous trip I am glad I ran into Noodle Theory.  It's a nice cozy place to get your ramen/noodle on. I can't say it can fit a college student's budget; even though I have a job which supports my eating habits I am still frugal. Noodle Theory is one of those places you have to enjoy every now and then. Still it's a place worth visiting especially on a rainy day. . . so Mother Nature please send more rain to the East Bay. Thanks!!!
