Living in Ventura County has it's pros and cons. The pros: the weather, strawberry fields, and the harbors/beaches. The cons (comparing Rowland Heights/Covina/La Puente): the lack of entertainment, the lack of diverse food palaces, the lack of really food Asian markets, and the lack of authentic boba. Authentic? Yes, authentic. I would have to travel long distances to have real boba. When I mean long distances, I meant 50 miles away from home. When I mean authentic, I mean milk tea, taro, and lychee. There is one place here in Ventura County which makes me face palm everytime I see an advertisement from them, but I'm not talking about that place (I might do a review on that later, MIGHT). Then there is Big Straw Boba (BSB) located not far from the Esplanade.
When I judge a boba place I judge them by the simplest drink, a milk tea boba. There are a couple of places where I went to where you can taste the powder they use for the milk tea. There are others where the milk tea is great and which ends up compensating for the mediocre boba. BSB is amazing, the milk tea was perfectly sweetened and the boba was chewy enough to enjoy but not so chewy where it takes a lifetime to chomp it down.
When I went BSB (it was around lunch time 11:45am) I was the only one there. The place was really nice and there was a bench along side of the walls to seat 15-20 people for those waiting a long time for their drink (great idea compared to having tables and chairs). When I looked at the menu, milk tea wasn't one of the first drinks listed. They had all their fruit drinks listed first and it was odd to me because usually the milk teas are the most popular ones. Anywho, I ordered my drink (they take Visa and Mastercard) and the lady at the registered got my drink right away. As you see from my picture, they didn't pack my drink with ice and didn't overwhelm me with a ton of boba. It was seriously the perfect boba.
The saddest part is when it was gone. As for the price for a large, it's $4.50; $4.80 for other drinks. So it's the average price of a boba drink. Next time I'll have more pictures to upload and I'll let you know about their milk pudding. Overall, BSB is a place I am definitely going back to and if you're every in the area and craving boba, this is one of THE places to go to get your fix. I'll let you know about the other places in the area in soon. Enjoy!! ^____^
