If you're living in SoCal there are a couple of bakeries that people would recommend to visit depending on what area of SoCal you're in; Irvine/Rowland Heights area you'll be pointed to 85 Degrees. If you're anywhere else you'll be pointed to Porto's Bakery & Cafe.
I heard of Porto's but never been to one for the longest time. Once I had Porto's, I knew why it's one of THE places to go to get the full SoCal experience. The Porto's I visited was in Burbank since it's the nearest one to me and also it's on the way to the airport, got to avoid the overpriced food in the airport.
Porto's is known for their pastries and cakes but they also serve sandwiches and cafe beverages. Expect to spend some time aside; it get's packed! I barely got there before the afternoon rush, since it was a Friday, but the time I spent waiting in line was not the frustrating part. Parking is a minor headache as well since there is limited space and it's a tight squeeze.
Besides all of that, it is worth (almost) EVERYTHING! The most popular items are the cheese rolls, potato balls, guava and cheese pastry, and opera cake F.Y.I. For me I ordered an opera cake, cheesecake, a Cubano sandwich, and a blended white chocolate mocha drink. You get to order everything in one go as you get your pastries and that is a big convenience. The server who helped me was awesome and patient, since I kind of didn't know what to get when it was my turn (Sorry!).
As I was waiting for my sandwich and drink, I dove straight into dessert. The cheesecake was light in texture but great in flavor and for the opera cake, it was really decadent. By the time my sandwich arrived I was near to stuffed even though I took a few bites of each of the cakes. With my sandwich came plantain chips which were delicious! I didn't want my sandwich anymore, so I saved it for my flight. My drink was great as well, sweet enough to cover up the coffee taste and enough caffeine to keep me up long enough to get me through the rest of the day. When I did have my sandwich, it wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be, the bread was hard but there was flavor, not as awesome as their pastries though (maybe that's why people just go for the pastries in the first place).
Still for everything I paid for (which was around $20 which included those I ordered,4 cheese rolls (75 cents each), and 4 potato balls (90 cents each)) it was well worth the visit. Go for the sweets, cakes, pastries, and the popular items. Feeling hungry? Try out their sandwiches or salads, maybe you'll try something that blows your mind. If there's anything real negative about Porto's is it's to far to travel to, but other than that , if I'm in the area, whether full or not , I'm going to get myself some Porto's.
