I changed my rating for Gen to correlate with this entry.
This is way overdue and since I have about 15 minutes on hand to write this up quickly I thought I should share my experiences with the only AYCE Korean BBQ in the Ventura Tri-County area.
I went a few times after my post with my family and with my brother, who is immersed in Asian-foodie central (a.k.a Irvine and around that area), he had a great opinion on Gen which I took highly.
A little background on Gen, Gen is a chain restaurant having several locations found in the Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley. My brother made several points about Gen and for him the biggest one is price and value (value in this case is if he gets a lot (quantity) for his money). I have been to other AYCE KBBQ places and they are about 5 bucks cheaper in both their lunch, dinner, and weekend prices compared to Gen and they get the job done.
There is this one place I love in Irvine which has AYCE and then they have AYCE ice cream ^O^. Not just any ice cream, Thrifty's ice cream, and if you don't know that ice cream it is either you are too young OR you've been robbed of your childhood. They had green tea and cookies and cream, and man I wish I went out for seconds but there was a huge line for that. Another place I been to, they served free frozen yogurt after your meal which was a nice refreshing ending to a meat fest. I can name how other places did it but as you see Gen is more than meets the interior decorator's eye.
Recollecting all my other experiences with other KBBQ restaurants I fell into the over-hype of Gen. Yes, it's great to finally see an AYCE KBBQ place around here; and yes, it's so clean and modern, when I was eating there I felt elite. But!! Now recalling all those other times at Gen I felt partially cheated.
I tried to convince my brother it was an awesome place but you pay more for the ambiance. The portions are small and you get to order four items at a time. . . when you're at another place you can order 10 items and they'll get it to you without batting an eye. Another thing is the food, there are some meats which are really good and then there are some items which I question on why they are on the menu. But when you do get your four orders the quantity is small as well. Then you don't see the server for a while (more after you cook and consumed the little meat you have) or you call down another server to order more but that server has to get you your server. . . fun times.
TIP: Once you get your meat start ordering your second round and so forth.
Last is the price and as I stated already there are other places which are easy on the bank account but are far away. Koreatown is not bad of a drive but I understand why go there when you have Gen so conveniently here.
It's true Gen is here and is going to stay since it has been doing so well but I'm going to take caution when I go. Those other times I went I questioned if it was how I look that gave me the service I got. The world may never know. More than it is exciting to have AYCE KBBQ, I take it into consideration that Gen is not a place for a starving-broke-college student but more of a let's-try-something-new couple. . . family. . . group of friends who have the money.
