Sushi Fresh

The sign

This will be a quick one for today. Last Sunday my sister and I decided to try a sushi place we haven't tried before. Sushi Fresh was down the street and since it was so convenient we went.

A little back story to this place; Sushi Fresh was called something else and was an AYCE sushi establishment. Due to it being AYCE the place lost money instead of profiting and eventually closed down. However the place was then bought and ran under new management.

I was curious from the beginning about a rotating sushi bar and it took some time for me to try another sushi place. After trying a couple of other sushi places in Camarillo I felt no other sushi place in the area will be above par.

Tiff asked why I chose this table. I wanted to be able to take a picture of the whole place

We went when it was around 2/3pm and the place was empty. We were greeted right away from the only waitress in the room. The other servers were the two chefs at the bar. The music in the background was radio hits music and it was fairly loud. The speakers were on table top level next to some tables. I was about 10 feet away and I didn't like how loud it was, think about those sitting next to it. We ordered three rolls: Caterpillar, Las Vegas, and Paradise. It took a little while before we can get our rolls and while we were waiting a party of seven came in. Que the increase volume of the music. Why increase the volume when more people arrive? Whatever, the food arrived!!

The presentation was nice since everything came in together, may explain why it took longer than expected. The manager was catering to the other table while we were sitting there figuring out our food. Our waitress didn't know much what roll was which and she didn't know what was in the rolls after figuring things out. We dug in and boy, in that instant I tasted the Las Vegas roll I knew this place was not worth the money. The rolls were small, there wasn't much fish (mostly the imitation crab), and it tasted near to bland. Not even the sauces added much depth to the rolls except the Paradise roll.

The mango sauce on top of the Paradise roll was a little to much. The first bite I thought; "This is the perfect amount. . . " by the third bite, "Nope, nope, nope nope. Going to scrap this off now." The Caterpillar was lacking eel, and from what you see about with the Las Vegas, there isn't much to show for it as well.

Smothered in mango sauce on the left, no eel found on the right
When we were done the check came fast and the manager picked up to process my card fast as well. Our waitress visited us a couple times to check how we were doing but one small ding was I had to ask to refill my water. Small ding but really in an empty place? The atmosphere of this place is take- sake-bombs-till-your-heart's-content and the food is below to average sushi. I really thought Sushi Fresh was going to be my go-to sushi place in Cam; I guess I have to keep searching. It's a place to try because of the rotating bar. More than I would like to go back to try it, I'm not motivated enough.
