LA Cookie Con Part 1: Sugar. . .

There is nothing I can type up right now to explain my recent absence but I hope with this next set of series I can make up for it right away. I have big news to share however right now isn't the time and place because right now is the time and place to share my experience with L.A. Cookie Con and Sweets Show!!

I went in not knowing what to expect other than an unlimited supply of cookie samples which exceeded my expectations 10 fold!! It was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center and I would have to say there was so much popping. I was able to talk to some of the bakers, get some information, and then try some of their samples.

The Shugah Mama - This was a start to the phrase "Getting your [cookie] and eating it too". Being in NorCal has made me well aware about the food I eat. Yes 'organics' have been on the fence for me because there are times where organic is the bee's knees and there are times where I curse its deceitfulness. Well Shugah Mama can deceive me all she wants because her gluten-free cookies were the bee's knees to me. The cookie is soft with great texture, it does look a little flat; the flavor makes up for the lack of cookie volume. The owner was welcoming to every single person who passed by, offering them a cookie "shot".  It was great to see someone ride the sugar-high pretty nicely, compared to myself.

Sprinkles- They are very well known in SoCal to be one of the first shops in the start of Cupcake Mania (this is when cupcakes were all in, not saying they're not in anymore). Well guess what? They are starting to venture out into the cookie kingdom. They had two cookies to choose from, chocolate chip and oatmeal. The oatmeal was HELLA good, it was thin, soft, and the right amount of everything from texture to sweetness to the satisfying last bite. They weren't selling any of their cookies since they were located in the VIP section, however I had all the oatmeal cookies I could stomach for the time being. ^O^!!

Broadway Baker - The story behind these two is they originated from California and they met in New York. They decided to be a part of the baking biz and off they went back into California. When I met them they were really friendly guys with a heart filled with sugar and happiness. They were the first ones I met and I can tell from them setting their table up they put a lot of thought into it, down to the last crumb. I sampled their brownies which was a tease to the other delectables they had splayed across the table.

Unbaked Bar: A Cookie Dough Bar - Don't tell me you never licked the spoon to your uncooked cookie/brownie batter? Why does it have that distinct taste, the taste of secrecy and mischievousness? Such a guilty pleasure; every now and then I wonder if I'm capable of eating a whole batch. If I really put my mind into it as well as my stomach of course!! It's a risk I would be willing to make, but why take that risk when Unbaked Bar has me covered!!! Yes it seems too good to be true, do not fear because their cookie dough is raw-egg free. Olivia, the owner and founder, did what we have been thinking of, safe-to-eat-cookie dough. I have tried all their flavors (peanut butter, birthday cake, brownie, chocolate chip, sugar) and they were great to try. Mind you to slow down when you eat this because too much of a good thing can send you in the opposite direction. Getting sugared out sucks!!

The Cookie Expert - Sometimes ones has to well versed when it comes to making the perfect cookie and the Cookie Expert put some brains behind their cookies. It was interesting to see a lemon cookie, because there wasn't much lemon cookies out there anyways. There is something called the lemon bar, a lemon cookie cannot compute. It tasted as though it was a combination of lemon and a sugar cookie, quite refreshing from the sweets I decided to super indulge in. When I came across Cookie Expert I was really pushing for that sugar high which started coming towards a sugar low. The cookies were thin and soft and there was loads of sweetness to it. I really liked the chocolate chip cookie (I.E. The Original) because they used dark chocolate so it gave it a bitterness to it which I really like.

Milk + Brookies - This was a short-spontaneous stop, I saw it and tried it out. I've tried the brownie-cookie combination before, this is sweeter than the usual and more fudge like. It was pretty decadent, really made me want some milk.

Choctal - This too was a last-minute stop. At this point I have circled the whole convention at least 10 times and was trying out booths I completely overlooked. Oh! I was looking for habanero-peanut-butter-and-jelly cookies and ran into this place instead. Glad I did because they had some bombtastic ice cream. Ice cream I really wish I purchased but couldn't due to the weather. T___T At least I got to try some. I'm a vanilla lover, this time with Choctal the dark chocolate stole the show. Now I wish I had some. Also I gave a 3 for texture because the ice cream was super soft or at the point of melting, so meh!!

I have to say for this first part it was only a small fraction of the convention, a big fraction of the booths I was able to cover. This was seriously a sugar high no adult nor child nor candy pirate can withstand. There was a part where I muttered "I'm too old for this." Can't believe I typed that, it's the truth. This was great to try other delights I'm not able to drive to myself. One can only think 'sweetness' when it comes to Cookie Con; it was quite a surprise when I found out some treats with a kick. Stay tuned for my next entry on SPICE. . UP YOUR LIFE!!
